What is this book about?

The first line of the book I’m reading is:
“We all know Teacher Lillian is a terrible cook, don’t we children?”
It comes from the 2 novels in one that I’m read from the first book “His Amish Teacher” by Patricia Davids. The second book in this 2 in 1 is Dana R. Lynn’s “Plain Target”. I’ve just started reading it today.
