What are these books about?

When the Clouds Roll By

Annemarie Kendall is overjoyed when the armistice is signed and the Great War comes to an end. Her fiancé, Lieutenant Gilbert Ballard, is coming home, and though he is wounded, she is excited to start their life together. But when he arrives, her dreams are dashed when she learns Gilbert is suffering from headaches, depression, and an addiction to pain killers. This is not the man she had planned to marry. After serving in the trenches, Army Chaplain Samuel Vickary is barely holding onto his faith. Putting up a brave front as he ministers to the injured soldiers at the hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas, he befriends Gilbert and eventually falls for Annemarie. While Annemarie tries to sort out her confused feelings about the two men in her life, she witnesses firsthand the bitterness and hurt they both hold within. Who will she choose? Will she have the courage to follow her heart and become the woman God intended her to be? As the world emerges from the shadow of war, Annemarie clings to her faith as she wonders if her future holds the hope, happiness, and love for which she so desperately longs.

Whisper Goodbye

Crippled both physically and emotionally by his war injuries, First Lt. Gilbert Ballard struggles to find himself again in civilian life. After breaking his engagement to Annemarie Kendall, he has found solace in the arms of Mary McClarney, a spunky Irish immigrant nurse he met at the Army and Navy Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Yet Mary’s love for Gilbert goes unreturned.

If it’s not Gilbert’s insane jealousy over his former fiancée’s new marriage, it’s his addiction to pain killers and gambling that thwarts Gil’s own happiness. Worse, Gilbert’s mother, Evelyn, continually reminds him of what he lost when he pushed Annemarie away. Under Evelyn’s critical eye, Mary fights to believe in her worth, wondering if she will ever be enough.

As Mary longs for the day when Gilbert will finally let go of the past and learn to love her as she loves him, she realizes that the only way to open Gilbert’s heart is to whisper her goodbyes . . . and pray God will bring them back together.

Every Tear a Memory

Joanna Trapp found adventure serving in France as a “Hello Girl,” one of over 200 telephone operators called upon by General Pershing to serve in the Army Signal Corps, but she still mourns her doughboy sweetheart killed in battle. Returning to Hot Springs, Arkansas, she takes a job as a switchboard operator at the Arlington Hotel and quickly discovers that after her experiences overseas, civilian life proves dull.

Thomas Ballard still regrets he was medically ineligible to serve in the war and feels inferior to those who did, especially his war-hero brother, Gilbert. When Thomas finds himself attracted to Joanna, he strives to match her adventurous spirit, when all he really wants is to settle down, raise a family, and earn respect as a successful businessman.

As romance blossoms, can two such different people learn to accept not only their own but each other’s God-created individuality . . . or will love change them both?

  1. My sentimental song to pass the time during a road trip to visit a loved one is “Everything I Do” by Bryan Adams!

  2. We usually listen to praise and worship songs on long trips. I guess we are sentimental about going “home” and seeing Jesus 🙂

  3. I can’t think of any sentimental songs right off, but the first song I thought of is On the Road Again by Willie Nelson! LOL

  4. We play Praise and Worship music when on a car ride. Sadly I don’t go on car ride to see my parents as they are both in their heavenly home. Big adjustment. One day at a time.

  5. I’m not much for listening to music on long rides as my husband is usually listening to talk radio! And I am reading. But the first song that popped into my head was Over the River and thru the woods, to grandmother’s house, we go! The books look like my kind of book! Thank you for sharing about them.

  6. Probably something I’ve heard on the radio. I only listen to Christian music when I drive.

  7. My family always takes turns playing different music on long rides and I’m more of a For King and Country or Rend Collective fan than anything else.

  8. I can’t believe that I missed these Myra Johnson books, so I’m adding them to my wish list. I’d play a mix of old favorites from Twila Paris, Micheal W. Smith, and Steven Curtis Chapman.

  9. I’d see if I could find a Christian music station or use my phone to hear a variety of Christian songs.Third Day, Mercy Me…

  10. To pass the time, I’m listening to praise and worship music. One of my favorite is Talking to Jesus by Elevation Worship.

  11. Last time I went on a road trip was with my son and grandkids. We sang along with Kieth Green. We especially liked So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt. We also sang Veggie Tales. I like other’s suggestions of Bryan Adams, Lonestar, and Dan Folgerberg. They are on my iPod. I don’t listen to any contemporary songs. So my playlist is probably from what was on the piped in music when I was working. I’ve been retired for 7 years.

  12. It would probably be Huey Lewis and the News. That was what my family played on long road trips when I was a kid and whenever I hear their songs, it reminds me of our trips.

  13. My family listens to the radio when we travel-so we listen to Country music -so we do not sing a particular song .
