Book Review: A Love Like Ours by Becky Wade

Synopsis of the book:

Former Marine Jake Porter has far deeper scars than the one that marks his face. He struggles with symptoms of PTSD, lives a solitary life, and avoids relationships.

When Lyndie James, Jake’s childhood best friend, lands back in Holley, Texas, Jake cautiously hires her to exercise his Thoroughbreds. Lyndie is tender-hearted, fiercely determined, and afraid of nothing, just like when she was a child. Jake pairs her with Silver Leaf, a horse full of promise but lacking in results, hoping she can solve the mystery of the stallion’s reluctance to run.

Though Jake and Lyndie have grown into very different adults, the bond that existed during their childhood still ties them together. Against Jake’s will, Lyndie’s sparkling, optimistic personality begins to tear down the walls he’s built around his heart. A glimmer of the hope he’d thought he’d lost returns, but fears and regrets still plague him. Will Jake ever be able to love Lyndie like she deserves, or is his heart too shattered to mend?

My review:

This story now takes top billing in all of the stories that I have read by this author. I absolutely loved it. I really like the way this author takes tough issues and writes love stories with hope surrounding them. In this book, Jake struggles with PTSD and Lyndie has a sister with a disability. Both of them struggle with these issues but love gets them through.

I so much enjoyed Lyndie. Her creative nature, her loyalty, her braveness mixed with some vulnerability – they made for a wonderful woman. I loved everything about her. She was exactly what Jake needed. I loved that she didn’t let him push her away from him.

I thought Jake was a wonderful tribute to our military people. PTSD is a real struggle for our men and women coming home from war. There are no easy answers to the struggle and that made Jake very real to me. I also admired his protective nature particularly toward Lyndie.

I have to mention this because I got such a kick out of it when I was reading this story… I loved how there was a character who had a tendency to not finish her sentences and Lyndie would create endings to those sentences in her head. It was so funny to see some of the things that she thought the girl could say. 🙂

What I enjoyed most about this book:

Gosh. What didn’t I like? I pretty much enjoyed everything.

What I didn’t like about this book:

Yeah, I got nothing. I loved this book.

My rating:  5 out of 5 stars

Would I recommend this book to others?  Absolutely! It had real struggles, strong characters, nice humor, a nice faith message, and a wonderful romance. This is the third book in the series. It can be read as a standalone even though characters from the other books show up in it.  The timeline progresses throughout the series so I am enjoying reading about the Porter family events in the order they are happening. For that reason, you might want to try and read them in order.
