A Rumored Fortune by Joanna Davidson Politano | Book Review by Loraine Nunley @lorainenunley

Synopsis of the book:

Tressa Harlowe’s father kept his vast fortune hidden somewhere on his estate in the south of England and died suddenly, without telling anyone where he had concealed it. Now Tressa and her ailing mother are left with a mansion and an immense vineyard and no money to run it.

It doesn’t take long for a bevy of opportunists to flock to the estate under the guise of offering condolences. Tressa knows what they’re really up to. She’ll have to work with the rough and rusticated vineyard manager to keep laborers content without pay and discover the key to finding her father’s fortune — before someone else finds it first.

My review:

Lyrical, intimate, haunting, and romantic. I was drawn to the heroine’s struggle to trust God and love when she lacked in affection from those closest to her. True love made its way to her and I rejoiced when she found it. This story was unusual in that the heroine’s point of view (Tressa) is in first person, but the hero’s point of view (Donegan), is in third person. It took me some time to get used to that and it served to make me feel closer to Tressa.

I loved Tressa’s innocence and loyalty. She struggled with God’s love because her own father’s love was so illusive to her. Donegan was a strong hero and I liked that he was so honest, even about his feelings for Tressa.

At first, I found the flowery, lyrical language a neat change from my normal reading, but I have to admit that after awhile it began to wear on me. Toward the end, I was skimming the descriptions to get to the action. I did like that the story was a page turner in that aspect.

What I enjoyed most about this book:

The innocence and strength of character in Tressa Harlowe.

What I didn’t like about this book:

At first, I really enjoyed the amount of lyrical description but after awhile it took away from the action.

My rating:  4 out of 5 stars

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes. I found that the story was page turning and the writing musical.

This book sounds like a great read! I’ve been curious about this book, although I don’t really read books in this genre. However, I really want to try something new. And a lyrical and haunting historical sounds like a perfect book to take a chance on. Great review!
