Deadly Proof by Rachel Dylan | Book Review by Loraine Nunley

Synopsis of the book:

Tapped as lead counsel in a corporate cover-up lawsuit against Mason Pharmaceutical, Kate Sullivan knows this case could make her career. What really drives her, though, is getting justice for the victims whose lives were ruined by the company’s dangerous new drug. But when a whistleblower turns up dead, it paints a target on the back of everyone involved.

Former Army Ranger turned private investigator Landon James steps in to handle security for Kate. He’s still haunted by mistakes in his past and is determined never to let something like that happen again. But it soon appears someone is willing to do anything — even commit murder — to keep the case from going to trial.

As danger closes in, Landon can’t help but admire Kate’s courage and resolve — but will her determination not to back down become too great of a risk?

My review:

Where do I begin?  Romance, suspense, thrills wrapped up in a legal bow. It was a well done story. I learned quite a bit about the legal world from an admirable heroine. It kept me guessing because the evil that I thought I knew was not what I thought at all. I loved it.

As I am not at all familiar with the legal world, this story peaked my interest. What I really liked about it was that I learned about a legal process in a really entertaining manner. Sometimes Kate would have to explain a procedure to Landon, who was not an attorney. This gave me the opportunity to get my questions answered as well. Fun way to learn.

But it was really Kate that I liked the most. She was determined to get justice for her clients but she was firm about staying within the boundaries of the law to do so. Her moral compass was really strong. She wasn’t perfect but she had learned much from her past mistakes and it made her empathetic to others. Plus she had developed a strong faith which I found appealing.

I also enjoyed the chemistry between her and Landon. He is drawn to Kate right away and it makes for interesting conversations between them about God. Their relationship developed really well throughout the story. Not too fast but not too slow either.

And then there was the suspense. Who was the real villain? What was the real evil? Who could Kate trust? I was excited to find some twists and parts where I almost had to hold my breath while I read faster.

What I enjoyed most about this book:

Okay, this question is tough because I enjoyed a few things. Probably the strong, but not beat you over the head, faith thread coupled with the suspense and the romance.

What I didn’t like about this book:

There were a couple different points of view besides Kate’s and Landon’s which took away from the story (just a wee little bit) for me.

My rating:  4 1/2 out of 5 stars

Would I recommend this book to others?  I would definitely recommend this book. Particularly if you are interested in legal thrillers. This is the first book in the series and I will definitely be picking up the others when they come out.
