Silent Night Standoff by Susan Sleeman | Book Review by Loraine Nunley #BookReview @lorainenunley

Synopsis of the book:

When armed robbers strike her bank, hostage negotiator Skyler Brennan’s life is on the line. Rescue comes from the last person she thought she could count on — the ex-boyfriend who chose his job over their relationship. FBI agent Logan Hunter knows how much is resting on this case. The promotion of his dreams… and the safety of the woman he’s never been able to forget. But when an unexpected twist in the case pulls Logan in two separate directions, he’ll have to make an impossible choice. Will he manage to have it all by Christmas — a career and love — or will he lose them both?

My review:

Who was after Skyler and why was Logan the one who needed to protect her? I enjoyed how Skyler had to wrestle with those questions and her hurt feelings that Logan’s sudden appearance brought to the surface. This story was a good mix of suspense and romance.

I love stories with an ensemble of characters and this story fit that perfectly. The way these professionals banded together to become their own family was endearing. It also gave me some empathy for Logan who felt like an outsider when he was trying to be Skyler’s protector.

Skyler is strong and determined, but I liked that there was still a softness to her and that she could be reasoned with when it came to her well being. At first I wasn’t sure I was going to like Logan since I felt much like her ‘family’ did about the man who had hurt their friend. The struggle for Logan to find balance between his professional and personal life was upfront most of the story but, smart man that he was, in the end he figured out what was most important.

What I enjoyed most about this book

Skyler’s friends who were her family. What a neat bunch of characters. I can’t wait to read their stories.

What I didn’t like about this book:

I was a little taken by surprise in the villain revelation. I think there should have been more of a build up earlier in the story on that.

My rating:  4 out of 5 stars

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes, especially if you like a group of quirky characters. There was good suspense and romance. This is the first book in the series.
