Book Review: The Isaac Project by Sarah Monzon

Synopsis from back of book: 

Becky Sawyer’s life unravels in a single day.  Not only does she catch her boyfriend, the man she hoped to marry, lip-locked with another woman, she also receives the gut-wrenching news that her grandfather, the man who raised her, is dying.  His last wish? To see her happily married.  Heartbroken, Becky seeks inspiration in the pages of the Holy Scriptures.  And finds it in the story of Isaac and Rebekah.

If love couldn’t keep his parents together, Luck Masterson wonders what will make a marriage last.  He decides to steer clear of all women — especially crazy ones like Becky Sawyer, who employs a friend to find her a husband.  But when he feels the dogged promptings of the Holy Spirit to move across the country and marry a complete stranger, it seems love has little to do with it anyway.

With commitment their only foundation, and love constantly thwarted, can an arrange marriage find happiness in the twenty-first century?

My review:

I liked the idea of an arranged marriage in twenty-first century America.  It was this unusual take on the Biblical story of Isaac and Rebekah that peaked my interest for reading this story.  I felt that it took too long for Luke and Becky to meet (almost 1/3 of the way into the book) and that made the beginning drag for me as if I were reading too much back story.  After they met, the pacing picked up and it was a nice story.  I liked that Luke was committed to his word which made him work hard at making their marriage work.

I felt sorry for Rebekah and understood what prompted her to seek out an arranged marriage, but I found her lack of confidence difficult to watch as Luke worked so hard on their marriage.

I admired Luke’s commitment to the whole arranged marriage idea and to his wedding vows.  One thing that I had a problem with was how he handled his job before he married Becky.  I felt that it was out of character for him, especially as I got to know him more.

What I enjoyed most about this book:  Luke’s commitment to Becky and their marriage.

What I didn’t like about this book: That it took so long for Becky and Luke to meet and that Becky was  a little “high maintenance” for someone who wanted the arranged marriage.

My rating:  2 1/2 out of 5 stars

Would I recommend this book to others?  Possibly.  The great thing about books is that there is something for everyone.  This book did not work for me, but it may work for someone else.  It is a nice contemporary twist on the Biblical story of Isaac and Rebekah.
