I am a former military wife so I feel an immediate kinship with women who are involved with military men. My husband, who is now retired from the military, is my real-life hero. That comes with the sighs over how good he looks in a uniform, the pride of his loyalty to his country, and the security I gain from his strength.
There is something about a man who is willing to fight for those that he loves, be it his God, his country, his family or his friends. At the same time, there is something about a woman who falls in love with that kind of man. She must be willing to share him which means being confident in her worth and she must be willing to support him especially when that means that she must hold down the fort when he is away. I think that combination makes for a good romance.
Back of the book: Dashing and valiantly wounded, Captain John Gallows could have stepped straight out of an army recruitment poster. Leanne Sample can’t help being impressed—although the lovely Red Cross nurse tries to hide it. She knows better than to get attached to the daring captain who is only home to heal and help rally support for the war’s final push. As soon as he’s well enough, he’ll rush back to Europe, back to war—and far away from South Carolina and Leanne. But when an epidemic strikes close to home, John comes to realize what it truly means to be a hero—Leanne’s hero.
Journey of Hope by Debbie Kaufman
Back of the book: Escaping a society wedding, Annabelle Baldwin followed her heart to Liberia to pursue her calling as a missionary. But when an attempted kidnapping lands her under the protection of Stewart Hastings, Anna’s journey takes a new turn. The wounded war veteran needs a guide through the jungle. It’s a job the underfunded missionary can’t refuse, despite the feelings Stewart stirs in her guarded heart.
Stewart knows he won’t succeed without Anna’s expertise. And when danger puts her life at risk, he realizes he cannot live without Anna by his side. But what will it take for a man who has lost his faith to capture the heart of a woman who lives for hers?
