Book Review: Welcome to Last Chance by Cathleen Armstrong

Synopsis of the book:

The red warning light on her car dashboard drove Lainie Davis to seek help in the tiny town of Last Chance, New Mexico. But as she encounters the people who make Last Chance their home, it’s her heart that is flashing bright red warning lights. These people are entirely too nice, too accommodating, and too interested in her personal life for Lainie’s comfort–especially since she’s on the run and hoping to slip away unnoticed.

Yet in spite of herself, Lainie finds that she is increasingly drawn in to the dramas of small town life. An old church lady who always has room for a stranger. A handsome bartender with a secret life. A single mom running her diner and worrying over her teenage son. Could Lainie actually make a life in this little hick town? Or will the past catch up to her even here in the middle of nowhere?

My review:

This story took me some time to get into because I really wanted to like Lainie and she made it difficult. But I enjoyed the people of the town of Last Chance. There was a great mix of personalities that showed even Christians are human.

The romance was not as appealing to me as the character growth in Lainie. She went from being completely selfish to being someone who gave to others. It was a struggle for her especially since the townspeople had her under a microscope, but she eventually learned to love even that part of being in a small town.

What I enjoyed most about this book:

Elizabeth and the other characters who showed up in Lainie’s path.

What I didn’t like about this book:

Lainie’s personality was hard for me to get past even at the end of her story.

Would I recommend this book to others? Possibly. The small town people making a difference in one lost soul make for a good story. The romance was just okay for me. This is the first book in this series.
