A Match of Wits by Jen Turano | Book Review by Loraine Nunley

Synopsis from back of book

After his departure from New York two years ago to meet up with his almost-fiancée, Zayne Beckett is the last person Agatha Watson wanted to stumble upon in her travels as a reporter with the New York Tribune.  Quite pathetically bedraggled, he clearly needs to be taken in hand and sent back East to his family.  Although she no longer has feelings for him, Agatha realizes — by hook or by crook — she’ll have to be the one to get the obstinate man home.

Zayne has no desire to be taken anywhere and is prepared to drag his heels all the way home… until he finds himself slipping back into the familiar banter of his former friendship with Agatha.  Once they arrive in New York, Zayne realizes Agatha’s determined nose for news has earned her a few enemies, and he hopes to repay her help with some help of his own.  When she rebuffs all of his attempts to prove himself a knight in shining armor, the lengths to which they’ll go to win this battle of wills lead to some memorable antics.

Everyone else may think them a match but nothing could be further from the truth — until Agatha finds herself in real trouble.  Have these two stubborn, too-smart-for-their-own-good people been meant for each other all along?

My review:

One thing that I can always count on when reading this authors books is that I will smile and laugh.  How does she come up with some of the funny things that she puts her poor characters through?  After watching Zayne and Agatha dance around their feelings for each other in the previous books of this series, I finally received closure reading their story.  This was a fun read.

Agatha was just as fun as I remembered her to be from the other books in this series, but I was able to become better friends with her in this one.  She is an independent, compassionate, and smart lady who also has an impetuous nature that seems to land her in the strangest circumstances.  I loved that she was a writer who was intent on using her God-given talents to make the world a better place.

Now Zayne… poor misguided man.  He has had feelings for Agatha for a very long time, but is clueless as to the state of his own heart.  This causes him to make a mess of his friendship with Agatha every time he attempts to help her.  But I liked that he was sincere and willing to admit when he was wrong.

I have to address the P-I-G…  Oh I particularly loved that part of this story.  You have to read it to find out more, but suffice it to say, I laughed many times just because of that little thing.  And we get to see more of little Piper who is a eight going on thirty.  She is the voice of reason when the adults are making things too complicated.

What I enjoyed most about this book:  The P-I-G and that the story was so humorous.  I was smiling and laughing throughout it.

What I didn’t like about this book: There were times when I wanted to shake Agatha for being so impatient and rushing into things when she should have waited.  But that was offset by the times when I just shook my head at Zayne’s cluelessness.

My rating:  4 out of 5 stars

Would I recommend this book to others?  Yes.  This author is becoming known for quirky characters and humorous story lines and I have to agree with that.  This story was light hearted and funny.  This is the final book in the series.  It is a standalone book but the characters from the other books do appear in this book.  Also reading the previous books in the series gives a little more depth to Agatha and Zayne’s story because we watch them interact in those stories.

Where can I learn more about this author and their books?
