A Desperate Hope
(Empire State #3)
By Elizabeth Camden
Christian Historical Romance
Paperback & ebook, 352 Pages
February 5th 2019 by Bethany House Publishers

Eloise Drake’s prim demeanor hides the turbulent past she believes is finally behind her. A mathematical genius, she’s now a successful accountant for the largest engineering project in 1908 New York. But to her dismay, her new position puts her back in the path of the man responsible for her deepest heartbreak.

Alex Duval is the mayor of a town about to be wiped off the map. The state plans to flood the entire valley where his town sits in order to build a new reservoir, and Alex is stunned to discover the woman he once loved on the team charged with the demolition. With his world crumbling around him, Alex devises a risky plan to save his town–but he needs Eloise’s help to succeed.

Alex is determined to win back the woman he thought he’d lost forever, but even their combined ingenuity may not be enough to overcome the odds against them.

My Review

This was a compelling story of love and the industrious nature of humanity. I was drawn into the history of a dying small town standing in the way of progress.

Eloise and Alex are on opposite ends of the personality spectrum. She is a planner and he is a risk taker. Together they balanced each other but until they began to work together, those opposing personalities were like watching magnets being pushed together at the same poles.

I was fascinated with the solution that the town came up with to save themselves from being wiped off the map. And the mystery of the saboteurs had me turning pages right up to the end.

What I enjoyed most about this book:

The historical detail of the towns progress.

What I didn’t like about this book:

There were a few times that I wanted to knock some sense into Alex and Eloise.

My rating:  4 1/2 out of 5 stars

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes, particularly if you like historical richness. I found that compelling. This is the third book in the series. I haven’t read the first two but I believe some characters from them show up in this story. This reads well as a standalone.

Note: I received this book complimentary as a participant of the Prism Book Tour. I was not required to give a positive review. All of the opinions I have expressed here are my own.
