What is this book about?
Caroline Delacroix is at the pinnacle of Washington high society in her role as secretary to the first lady of the United States. But beneath the facade of her beauty, glamorous wardrobe, and dazzling personality, she’s hiding a terrible secret. If she cannot untangle a web of foreign espionage, her brother will face execution for treason.
Nathaniel Trask is the newly appointed head of the president’s Secret Service team. He is immediately suspicious of Caroline despite his overwhelming attraction to her quick wit and undeniable charm. Desperate to keep the president protected, Nathaniel must battle to keep his focus fully on his job as the threat to the president rises.
Amid the glamorous pageantry of Gilded Age Washington, DC, Caroline and Nathaniel will face adventure, danger, and heartbreak in a race against time that will span the continent and the depth of human emotion.
My review:
This story was rich with historical events, interesting characters, and sweet selfless romance. I loved it. Some readers may not like Caroline who was an unmovable force in many ways, but I truly respected her loyalty to those she loved. It was a small circle but her devotion was fierce.
Nathaniel was an interesting and complex man for Caroline to fall in love with. They were both strong people but together they had the perfect mix of strength and compassion.
This novel also included actual historical figures and it was a case of me learning more history from fiction than I did in history classes as a child. So well done.
What I enjoyed most about this book:
The fierce loyalty and devotion that Caroline showered on her loved ones.
What I didn’t like about this book:
Nothing.
Would I recommend this book to others? Absolutely. Great characters, wonderfully sweet romance, and fascinating historical tie-ins. This is the second book in the series. It can be read as a standalone but I would recommend reading the first book for a fuller understanding of the sibling dynamics.

I keep forgetting about this series! It’s definitely one I’ve long been wanting to read 🙂
I’m a lot like you Loraine where I’ve learned more history in fiction than when I was in school. I’ve said quite often that if my teacher would have made it more interesting like in a book, I would have learned it a lot easier!
Thanks for sharing your review, definitely makes me want to read this one (and the other two) even more 🙂
