A Haven on Orchard Lane by Lawana Blackwell | Book review by Loraine Nunley #bookreview

Synopsis of the book:

Famed actress Charlotte Ward stepped away from the Victorian London stage five years ago. Now in desperate circumstances, she tries to restart her career—only to experience a complete collapse. Against her better judgment, Charlotte’s estranged daughter, Rosalind, comes to her mother’s rescue and moves her to a quiet English coastal village where her mother can evade the gossip columnists, at least for a time.

Charlotte is grateful to re-establish even tenuous family ties with Rosalind. As one with regrets over her own romantic past, she’s happy to see love blossom for her daughter. For Rosalind, however, it’s time away from teaching, and now she must care for the mother who wasn’t there for her. And what could possibly be more complicated than romance?

But there can be no permanent escape from the threats of recent months. As the privacy they seek is threatened, mother and daughter must make some difficult decisions—ones that could jeopardize those they care about most.

My review:

I enjoyed the village this author created. It was truly a haven, not only for Charlotte and her daughter Rosalind, but also for those people who came in contact with them.

Charlotte was so endearing and humble yet her wisdom touched so many lives and she embodied God’s love for others.

At first Rosalind was reluctant to help her mother because they had been estranged but not long after they get together, Rosalind discovers her mother’s true nature which is vastly different from the woman she thought she knew. They reconcile. I liked that this happened early in the story because their relationship grew wonderfully after that.

There was romance for Rosalind, but it was secondary to the main story. A sweet touch. One of my favorite parts of the book were the two boys that Charlotte befriends. They added an emotional depth with their thoughts and feelings. Charlotte helped them with their problems in subtle ways but made a great impact.

What I enjoyed most about this book:

The two boys and Charlotte’s interactions with them.

What I didn’t like about this book:

The story had a slow start for me. It took a few chapters to really get into.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes. This is a lovely story of forgiveness and represents God’s love well. It also had a group of good characters.
