Missing by Dee Henderson
Synopsis of the story:
A Wyoming sheriff is called to Chicago when his elderly mother goes missing from her retirement community. Paired with a savvy Chicago cop, the two soon launch into a race against the clock when they realize something dark may lie at the heart of the disappearance.
My review:
This was a nice little bit of a mystery story. I enjoyed the beginning of the relationship between John, the sheriff, and Sharon, the Chicago cop. I also liked how John felt about his mother. I did miss the depth of suspense that I have come to expect from this author, but the mystery was nice for a novella.
My rating: 3 1/2 out of 5 stars
Shadowed by Dani Pettrey
Synopsis of the story:
Adventure, romance, and danger collide when a young Alaskan fisherman nets the body of a Russian open water swimming competitor. Another swimmer, who’d been the dead woman’s roommate years ago, is pulled into the search for answers as it grows more and more clear that something sinister is at play.
My review:
Having read this author’s ‘Alaskan Courage’ series, which this novella is a prequel to, I was expecting lots of danger and romance. I was not disappointed. I was immediately thrown into the deep end (pun intended) of espionage and intrigue. From the beginning to the end, I was on the edge of my seat wondering how Ben and Libby would solve the mystery of her friend’s death, keep from becoming the next victims, and explore their growing feelings for one another. It all happened and it was a satisfying read.
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Blackout by Lynette Eason
Synopsis of the story:
A young woman once implicated in a robbery gone wrong finds herself at risk years later when the real culprit is up for parole. The loot taken that night has never been found and he believes she knows where it’s hidden — only her memory of that night has always been unreliable. Can she remember enough to find her way to safety?
My review:
Right at the start, I’m fearing for Macey’s life and wondering what it is that she doesn’t remember. It’s something important enough to kill for. I really liked Chad who genuinely cared about Macey even after she pushed him away. I loved the puzzle as I tried to figure out from the little clues I got, who was after her. Good suspense. Chad and Macey admitting their feelings for one another seemed a little quick for me, but it was clear that they would end up together anyway.
My rating: 4 1/2 out of 5 stars
Overall Thoughts
I think that it must be difficult to write good romantic suspense in novellas because of the short amount of time that you have to do it. I thought that these authors did a good job combining both the romance and suspense.
Overall rating: 4 1/2 out of 5 stars
Would I recommend this book to others? Definitely. Especially if you are already fans of Dani Pettrey and Lynette Eason. I do think that fans of Dee Henderson may be a little disappointed because the suspense is not as much as she usually writes, but it is still a good mystery.
