The Healing Tree by Amy De Trempe
Book Review
Synopsis from GoodReads:
Lady Lilian Bliant appears to be a serene earl’s daughter, but under her exotic façade she has a spine of steel. She is determined to thwart her manipulative father’s plan to shackle her to a weak-willed man of the ton and is successful until Lord Maxwell Warrick becomes a suitor.
Lord Max is anything but weak-willed. He is happy with his life until Lady Lilian wreaks havoc on his heart. Despite her continued rejection, Max wants Lily to trust him, trust in his love, and have faith in the Lord.
With the Lord’s guidance, and through prayer, he begins to hope that one day their differences will be put aside and Lily will accept his faith as her own and Max as her husband.
My review:
Overall I enjoyed this book. The relationship between Lily and Max slowly developed over time which I liked. I loved Max’s character. He was honorable, loyal, handsome and Godly – a great hero. I enjoyed watching Lily’s growth in both her love for Max and her knowledge of God. The only downside of the story was Lily’s father. He was a true villain and I truly did not like him. There was a part in the book that told of the extent of her father’s evil. It gave Lily’s character more depth, but I didn’t like it. For that reason I would not consider this a book for a younger audience.
What I enjoyed most about this book:
Max’s persistence of Lily and his relationship with God. I also loved how the secondary characters, from Lily’s cousins to Max’s family, loved and protected them which was a good contrast to her father’s wickedness.
What I liked somewhat about this book:
I liked that Lily’s feelings for Max developed throughout the book. It felt like a natural development rather than contrived. I also liked the development of Lily’s knowledge of God because she tested Max’s knowledge of his faith.
What I didn’t like about this book:
Lily’s father, who was a true villain. There was a part that was very descriptive of the evil that the man was capable of. It really gave a depth to why Lily was the way she was, but at the same time I wished that his evil had not been soooo bad. This is what pushed the book out of the “good clean” category for me.
My rating: 3 1/2 out of 5 stars
Would I recommend this book to others?
Yes, but this was not a regency book that I would consider a “good clean” romance simply because of the character of Lily’s father. There was a good spiritual thread throughout.
