What is this book about?

Numbed by grief and harboring shameful secrets, Lt. Adler Paxton ships to England with the US 357th Fighter Group in 1943. Determined to become an ace pilot, Adler battles the German Luftwaffe in treacherous dogfights in the skies over France as the Allies struggle for control of the air before the D-day invasion.

Violet Lindstrom wanted to be a missionary, but for now she serves in the American Red Cross, where she arranges entertainment for the men of the 357th in the Aeroclub on base and sets up programs for local children. Drawn to the mysterious Adler, she enlists his help with her work and urges him to reconnect with his family after a long estrangement.

Despite himself, Adler finds his defenses crumbling when it comes to Violet. But D-day draws near. And secrets can’t stay buried forever..

My review:

Two people not interested in pursuing relationships cannot avoid the attraction that springs up between them. The conflict was evident right away. Adler definitely had a tragic back story and his desire to keep running from his ghosts drew me in, and drew Violet to him as well. I really enjoyed his journey to forgiving himself and seeking healing. Violet was sweet and slightly misguided in her belief of God’s plans for her life. She also struggled but her issues were more relatable because they were the kind that many Christian’s struggle with. And like many people, she didn’t realize she had issues until Adler’s journey made her look more deeply at her own motivations. The romance was sweet and I rooted for both of them to find their happily ever after. I was also pleased to see characters from book one show up.

What I enjoyed most about this book

Definitely the romance and Adler’s reluctance to pursue Violet

What I didn’t like about this book:

Technical aspects of Adler’s missions

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes. Great but deeply flawed characters and sweet romance. This is the second book in the series and while it can be read as a standalone story, it is linked to the first book. I read the first one quite some time ago and wish I had read it closer to this one.
