What is this book about?

Munich, 1938. Evelyn Brand is an American foreign correspondent as determined to prove her worth in a male-dominated profession as she is to expose the growing tyranny in Nazi Germany. To do so, she must walk a thin line. If she offends the government, she could be expelled from the country–or worse. If she fails to truthfully report on major stories, she’ll never be able to give a voice to the oppressed–and wake up the folks back home.

In another part of the city, American graduate student Peter Lang is working on his PhD in German. Disillusioned with the chaos in the world due to the Great Depression, he is impressed with the prosperity and order of German society. But when the brutality of the regime hits close, he discovers a far better way to use his contacts within the Nazi party–to feed information to the shrewd reporter he can’t get off his mind.

My review:

In many respects this story was difficult to read. It highlighted how easy it is for people to be blind to atrocities against others especially when their own lives are prosperous. Even Peter had that problem in the beginning. However, I really liked that he was a man who was open to discussion about opposing views. He respected people. In particular, he respected Evelyn, not only for her beliefs but also for her personality. He didn’t try to change her.

Evelyn was such a firecracker and I loved her thirst for truth and her bravery in putting it out there. There was also a kindness about her that made people open up to her. Together, she and Peter made a great team. Their romance was incredibly sweet and satisfying.

Not to be ignored was the suspense. Oh the suspense! I don’t know if I took a deep breath the entire last half of the book.

What I enjoyed most about this book:

The respect that Peter had for Evelyn as a person.

What I didn’t like about this book:

Nothing
