Head in the Clouds by Karen Witemeyer | Book Review by Loraine Nunley

Synopsis from back of book

Adelaide Proctor longs to find a real-life storybook hero to claim as her own. But when a husband-hunting debacle leaves her humiliated, she interviews for a governess position on a remote Texas sheep ranch and vows to leave her silly romantic yearnings behind.

Gideon Westcott left his privileged life in England to make a name for himself in America’s wool industry, never expecting to end up with a child. To his dismay, five-year-old Isabella hasn’t uttered a word since she lost her mother. The unconventionality of the new governess concerns Gideon — and intrigues him at the same time. But he can’t afford distractions.

When Isabella’s uncle comes to claim the girl — and her inheritance — Gideon and Adelaide must work together to protect Isabella form the man’s evil schemes. Soon neither can deny their growing attraction. But after so many heartbreaks, will Adelaide be willing to get her head out of the clouds and put her heart on the line?

My review:

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I wasn’t sure if I would like Adelaide because of her initial impulsiveness which gets her into trouble, but I quickly learned that her head in the clouds only spoke of a hope for a brighter future. I was hooked and determined to follow her story to see her get a happy ending.

Adelaide was not a proper governess, but her character was filled with such warmth that it was easy to see why those around her liked her. At first I wondered what was up with the yellow outfits, but I soon learned the reason and it made Gideon’s nickname for her more special. (No spoilers here, you will have to read the book to find out the details.)

Gideon and Isabella had me from the start. I loved Gideon’s loyalty to his daughter and to the sheep ranch that he worked so hard maintaining. Handsome, loyal, loving… He was everything I wanted in a hero. I also liked getting to know Isabella and watching her come to love Adelaide.

What I enjoyed most about this book:

The sweetness of the romance mixed with the suspense of protecting Isabella from evil.

What I didn’t like about this book:

Without giving a spoiler, I can only say that there is a sad part that I didn’t like because it made me get choked up.

My rating:  5 out of 5 stars

Would I recommend this book to others?  Oh yes. While the romance is sweet, it is mixed with a good amount of suspense and has great characters. This is my first book by this author and it will not be the last.
