Unboxing and Review: Fresh Fiction Box (January 2020)

If you’ve been around the book giveaway world for any length of time, chances are pretty good that you’ve come across Fresh Fiction. They are a good resource to find new fiction. They also offer monthly giveaways for a variety of authors and genres. I’ve entered some of their giveaways and shared many of them on social media.

Fresh Fiction also offers a monthly subscription service.

There is something about getting a box in the mail knowing that it contains a precious treasure of books. 🙂 I watched a few unboxing videos and was intrigued. So I signed up for a box.

I received my first box and am going to share the contents with you here. My review is not for the books I received because I haven’t read them yet, but instead will be for the content and subscription experience.

Unboxing

Bright pink box. Very noticeable that a fun surprise arrived in the mail for me. 🙂

Along with a postcard about Fresh Fiction and their relevant information, there were some postcard sized cards with graphics advertising a book. The Fresh Fiction website states that there would be 1 – 3 eBooks and 3 – 5 print books in each box. I did not get any links or information for an eBook.

Books nicely covered and still a surprise to open.

The first book in the box was A New Leash on Love by Melissa Senate from Harlequin’s Special Edition line (Contemporary Romance). Here is the back cover blurb:

“Army vet Matt Fielding is back—for good—and finding a puppy for his niece. He’s also avoiding Claire Asher, his high school ex—spotted at the local animal shelter! He can’t refuse her offer of puppy training, but soon their friendly reunion brings back memories of their teenage love, and sparks fly. Will their rekindled affair lead Matt to put a ring on it?”

The second book in the box was Slow Dancing at Sunrise by Jo McNally from HQN (Contemporary Romance). Here is the back cover blurb:

“When accountant Whitney Foster’s carefully calculated life blows up, she escapes to the one place that’s always felt like home. But Rendezvous Falls has changed since she’s been away. Her aunt Helen’s winery is in trouble. And she doesn’t trust the sexy, surly stranger working the vineyard as far as she can throw him.
Luke Rutledge would do anything for Helen, who’s been like a mother to him. Revive the winery? Sure. Repair her property? No problem. Tolerate Helen’s infuriating, big-shot niece? Well…maybe. But as he and Whitney are forced to work together to rebuild the business, her chilly facade reveals a woman as complex and intoxicating as a fine merlot. Throw in a matchmaking book club hell-bent on happily-ever-after and it’s a potent cocktail.
Love should never be calculated. But it doesn’t take Whitney’s math skills to see that this is adding to up to one tantalizing adventure…”

The third book in the box was The Intended Victim by Alexandra Ivy from Zebra Books. Romantic Suspense. Here is the back cover blurb:

“The body lying on a cold steel slab bears all the hallmarks of the Chicago Butcher. There’s a cruel slash across her throat, deep enough to sever the carotid artery, and a small crescent carved into her right breast. Her delicate features are painfully familiar to Ash Marcel, once a rising star in the Chicago PD. But though the victim resembles his former fiancée, Remi Walsh, he knows it’s not her.
Though Remi escaped a serial killer five years ago, her father died trying to save her. Grief and guilt caused her to pull away from the man she loved. Now Ash is back in her life, insisting that Remi is still in danger.
Someone is targeting women who look just like Remi. With or without a badge, Ash intends to unmask the Butcher. But the killer isn’t playing games any longer. He’s moving in, ready to finish what he started, and prove there’s nothing more terrifying than a killer’s obsession . . .”

The fourth and final book in the box was Lean on Me by Pat Simmons from Sourcebooks Casablanca (Inspirational Romance). Here is the back cover blurb:

“Tabitha Knicely is overwhelmed with sorrow and exhaustion caring for her beloved great-aunt, whose dementia is getting worse. When her neighbor Marcus Whittington accuses Tabitha of elder neglect, he doesn’t realize how his threats to have Aunt Tweet taken away add to Tabitha’s pain.
Then Marcus gets to know the exuberant elderly lady and sees up close how hard Tabitha is fighting to keep everything together. Tabitha finds herself leaning on Marcus more and more. And he’s becoming more than happy to share her burdens…”

Review

What I liked:

  • I liked that this box was a bright color. It was easy to see that my special treat had arrived in the mail.
  • The box was packed well and none of the books were damaged.
  • All of the books were romance, which is my favorite genre. One was even an inspirational romance, also my favorite. I am intrigued by all of the book summaries and am hopeful that I will discover a new author to enjoy.

What I didn’t like:

  • The green tissue paper that the books were wrapped in did have some glitter on it that managed to stay off the books but got all over my hands. I am not a big fan of glitter.
  • The books that you receive are randomly packed so you do not have a say in what you receive, however, that does make for a (hopefully) fun surprise.
  • There was no eBook included as the website advertised. Here is what should be inside.

Overall Opinion

I liked this box. I wasn’t sure what to expect and I think that set the bar pretty low, but I was pleasantly surprised. Reading these books will give me a better idea of whether it was worth it, but my first impression of them is promising. The extra treats in this particular box were no big deal to me since I only subscribed to this service for the books.

I got a discount on my first box. The cost of this service is normally $25.95/month so with the four books I received, that averaged out to $6.49 per book which is good price.

I will continue the subscription for now.

This is my first time hearing of Fresh Fiction. I love beauty-product subscription boxes, but tend to be more choosy about books. I like Book of the Month where I can choose the book I get ahead of time.
Funny that you mentioned the glitter tissue paper because I would have loved that part!

I can appreciate that Dianna. If you have to pay good money for a book, it should be ones that you’d like. 🙂 I just got my next box from them and will be posting that review soon.
