What are these books about?

Holding the Fort

Louisa Bell never wanted to be a dance-hall singer, but dire circumstances force her hand. With a little help from her brother in the cavalry, she’s able to make ends meet, but lately he’s run afoul of his commanding officer, so she undertakes a visit to straighten him out.

Major Daniel Adams has his hands full at Fort Reno. He can barely control his rowdy troops, much less his two adolescent daughters. If Daniel doesn’t find someone respectable to guide his children, his mother-in-law insists she’ll take them.

When Louisa arrives with some reading materials, she’s mistaken for the governess who never appeared. Major Adams is skeptical. She bears little resemblance to his idea of a governess–they’re not supposed to be so blamed pretty–but he’s left without recourse. His mother-in-law must be satisfied, which leaves him turning a blind eye to his unconventional governess’s methods. Louisa’s never faced so important a performance. Can she keep her act together long enough?

At Love’s Bidding

After helping her grandfather at their Boston auction house, Miranda Wimplegate discovers she’s accidentally sold a powerful family’s prized portrait to an anonymous bidder. Desperate to appease the furious family, her grandfather tracks it to the Missouri Ozarks and makes an outlandish offer to buy the local auction house if they promise not to sell anything until he arrives.

Upon their arrival, however, they discover their new business doesn’t deal in fine antiques, but in livestock. And its manager, ruggedly handsome Wyatt Ballentine, is frustrated to discover his fussy new bosses don’t know a thing about the business he’s single-handedly kept afloat. Faced with more cattle than they can count–but no mysterious painting–Miranda and Wyatt form an unlikely but charged partnership to try and salvage a bad situation getting worse.

My favorite sumemer food is a cool drink because it gets super HOT in Texas in the summer. I like a strawberry lemonade with lots of crushef ice or a splurge for Starbucks Strawberry Acai Lemonade….sooooo good.

I love drinking ice cold water because it is scorching hot in Texas. I will grab a sweet iced tea also sometimes because there’s nothing better in the summertime.

My all time favorite drink in the summer is cold water with ice. I used to love homemade lemonade but I can’t drink that any longer. But I do love to eat made-from-scratch lemon bars!

My favorite summer treats are cantaloupe and watermelon. They are both delicious and low calorie and unfortunately only available during summer.

Homemade ice cream (with either strawberries or peaches included if they were in season) reminds me of summer. I’m an old Army brat and our vacation was always in the summer (usually July) which was the only time of the year we saw any of our relatives. The time was with lots of talking to catch up. playing games with my cousins and always lots of cook home cooking. Some of that cooking took place at the lake or some park with the dessert being home made ice cream. I was the churn sitting on top of a blanket to keep my bottom from freezing. Everyone else would take turns cranking the handle until it was stiff and time to dish our the delicious concoction we had stirred up. Even now when I make ice cream in a faster, more modern way, it brings back sweet memories of summer with relatives.

Watermelon. Love eating it in the summer. Good memories of our family cutting a big watermelon and sharing it.

Oh! Fresh picking berries. I haven’t done that in several years… I need to find a place near me. Thanks for sharing with us Joan. 🙂

Summer sausage with crackers and cheese reminds me of summer because we used to go to the park or on various outings when I was a kid and it was a very easy and cheap picnic lunch to pack for lots of kids, so we ate it quite often.

Home grown tomato sandwiches. My great-aunt babysat me and she would make tomato sandwiches from her garden for lunch most every day in the summer.
Also watermelon, because you can only get good watermelon in the summer.
