What is this book about?

Eleven-year-old Anne Shirley has never known a real home. Since her parents’ deaths, she’s bounced around to foster homes and orphanages. When she is sent by mistake to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert at the snug white farmhouse called Green Gables, she wants to stay forever. But Anne is not the sturdy boy Matthew and Marilla were expecting.

She’s a mischievous, talkative redheaded girl with a fierce temper, who tumbles into one scrape after another. Anne is not like anybody else, the Cuthberts agree; she is special, a girl with an enormous imagination. All she’s ever wanted is to belong somewhere. And the longer she stays at Green Gables, the harder it is for anyone to imagine life without her.

My review:

Surprisingly I did not read this classic when I was a child, but I have seen and loved the movies. With many book-to-movie adaptations, there is usually a sense of disappointment that the movie wasn’t up to par with the book. I was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case here. The movie was very true to the book with a few minor exceptions.

Anne is an orphan who, through some misunderstanding, ends up with the solitary siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. Anne is a dreamer with a positive outlook on life and the ability to bring joy into the lives of all lives she touches even in the midst of her missteps. Watching her grow and fall in love with the Cuthbert’s and them with her was immensely satisfying. This is a book that has a permanent spot on my bookshelves.

What I enjoyed most about this book:

The relationship growth between Anne and the Cuthberts.

What I didn’t like about this book:

Nothing

Rating 5 out of 5 stars

Would I recommend this book to others? Absolutely. This is a wonderfully written children’s book that truly earns the title ‘classic’. This is the first book in the series.
