What is this book about?

When the Germans march into Denmark, Baron Henrik Ahlefeldt exchanges his nobility for anonymity, assuming a new identity so he can secretly row messages for the Danish Resistance across the waters to Sweden.

American physicist Dr. Else Jensen refuses to leave Copenhagen and abandon her research–her life’s dream. While printing resistance newspapers, she hears stories of the movement’s legendary Havmand–the merman–and wonders if the mysterious and silent shipyard worker living in the same boardinghouse has something to hide.

When the Occupation cracks down on the Danes, these two passionate people will discover if there is more power in speech . . . or in silence.

My review:

It took me a few chapters to really get into this story because of the Danish and German vocabulary as well as some of the scientific details included in Else’s career. But once I was able to push past that and get to know the characters, I was drawn into the story. Reading about the history during this timeframe was similar to watching an accident in that I was upset by the atrocities but unable to look away (or put the book down). I had to see if Henrik and Else would make it out of evil clutches alive and find their way to each other.

Not only was there sweet romance, but the message of emotional healing and redemption was so very strong that I almost cried in some parts. And I loved both main characters with their strengths and complimentary personalities.

What I enjoyed most about this book:

The sweet romance between Henrik and Else.

What I didn’t like about this book:

It took some time for me to get into the story because of the Danish and German vocabulary.

Would I recommend this book to others? Yes. Such great storytelling about a very tough time in world history and a sweet romance throughout. This is the third book in the series but it can be read as a standalone story.

Note: I received this book complimentary as a participant in the Revell blog tour. I was not required to give a positive review. All of the opinions I have expressed here are my own.
